How to Get Back into Reading Books Again

If you are like many busy adults who are working and juggling family life, it can be hard to find time to pursue hobbies and passions. I know as a kid I could spend hours a day reading with little to no consequences.

But now as an adult and a mom, that is just so unrealistic. This lack of time can make it easy to fall into a reading slump and become a lapsed reader.

There is hope!

If you want to get back into the reading life as an adult then I want to encourage you to pursue this hobby! It can not be only very informative but also relaxing to take your mind off your giant to-do list.

Since this is the ultimate guide, I want to give you a few quick tips on how to break your reading slump and get back into reading again. THEN I will be sharing my favorite, easy-to-read book list that will help you start that reading habit!

best books to get back into reading guide

1️⃣ Treat reading like a multivitamin

The first step to success in reading more frequently is to treat it as an actual habit. In Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about building habits one minute at a time. So just like it takes you one minute (or quicker) to take a multivitamin, then I encourage you to start reading only one minute a day.

This can seem silly but remember, this isn’t about finishing a book in record time. It’s about creating a strong habit.

This little step will soon have you reading every day for a half hour or more!

2️⃣ Keep a running list of the books that interest you aka TBR

This is a big one for me! After finishing an amazing book, it can be hard to pick up another one. If you are like me in this, then I recommend you keep a TBR (to be read). I organize my TBR in my Notion book journal that way I can filter out exactly what I feel like reading next.

Another tip for creating a TBR list is saving any posts that you see on bookstagram, bookmark a blog post, or create a list on Goodreads. By creating a list of the best books to get back into reading, you will easily be able to find your next favorite book to read.

3️⃣ Take a break then jump back in

It is completely normal to get in a reading slump and sometimes it’s nice to go with the flow. You can take a couple of weeks off or a month and use that time to pursue another passion.

Give yourself some time away from reading, then when you come back you will be refreshed and ready to get back into reading.

4️⃣ Mix up how you read

This tip has been really great for me. I use to think I was a purist and that I could only read physical books. But as you get older and have kids you realize if you only read physical books then you won’t be reading at all.

Having a kindle e-reader literally opened up a whole new world of reading that I was missing out on. Now I read more digitally than I do physical books, which works out great for my current lifestyle.

If you find yourself thinking that you can only read physical books, then I really encourage you to branch out and try something new. I have doubled how many books I can read in a year by using audiobooks and ebooks.

5️⃣ Try a different genre

I’m sure you have noticed but when you read fantasy for 3 months straight then it can sometimes be hard to pick up ANOTHER book in the fantasy genre.

Whenever I notice I’m reading too much of one genre, then I intentionally start to mix it up. You will always have your favorites (paranormal romance junkie over here 🙋‍♀️), but it is good to mix up your genres to get back into reading.

I usually try to pick a genre that is completely opposite to what I had been reading. So if I was reading fantasy then I will pick up a book that is either a contemporary or non-fiction book.

This way you get to jump-start your reading habit again, well also try something new.

Well, fantasy has my heart, some of my top 5-star reads have come from genres I don’t typically read.

6️⃣ Participate in a reading challenge

If you need some more inspiration to read and are competitive, then a reading challenge can be perfect for you! There are so many good challenges like the A to Z Reading Challenge that can help you complete a good amount of books in a year.

Some of my other favorites are the banned book challenge, back to the classics, diversify your reading, and read around the world.

What should I read to get back into reading?
